The Renault 4 made its debut in 1961 in the harsh environment of the Camargue in southern France, where the terrain consists of saltwater lagoons, sandbanks and reeds.

It was produced from 1961 to 1992, designed by Fernand Picard and engineered by Robert Berthaud, as an economical car with durability and practicality. In spite of its sober bodywork, the Renault 4 was a huge success due to its good performance and was produced as is for 30 years.
This did not prevent numerous variants from being made.

Production also started in 1962 in Italy, in Pomigliano d'Arco (NA), and in the rest of Europe and the world.
